KTVU reports on CHORI Summer Student Program, training future doctors and scientists and increasing diversity in health-related research for 30 years. Each summer, about 50 high school, undergraduate, and graduate students from various ethnic and geographic backgrounds spend their summers conducting clinical and lab research with doctors and scientists at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. The CHORI Summer Student Program partners students interested in biomedical and other health-related research with world class scientists and doctors for intensive, hands-on research on everything from stem cells to obesity to diabetes. With a commitment to increasing diversity in research, the program has been funded in part by National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants to increase diversity in research for the last 30 years. The 2011 students came from various high schools, colleges, and universities including University of California, Berkeley; Columbia University; Brown University; Albany High School; and San Francisco’s Jewish Community High School
