Did you know the Catholic Church does NOT oppose stem cell research?

Meg M asked:
It has been claimed here that the Catholic Church opposes stem cell research (I’m looking at you, Dude). What the Church REALLY opposes is the killing of human embryos, NOT stem cell research itself. The Church is supportive of stem cell research that does not involve the destruction of human beings.

LadySuri, if people were spreading lies about your mother, would you not speak up?
Dude, here’s an article about the biased reporting: http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-smith042302.asp

I know that we do not oppose it. It is funny how much animosity is against the Church in this area. Even now that they have found that they do not even need embryonic stem cells at all because they can get the very same thing from amniotic fluid, they are still screaming they want to cut up fetuses. That’s just sick and evil.

So what? You just wasted five points to play “holier-than-thou” and I’M RIGHT AND YOU’RE WRONG!
Proud of yourself and your Chrstian values?
Definitely–privately. If a person is wrong about my mother or anything else I am not to go around telling everyone else how stupid that person is.

That’s a very nuanced distinction. Everyone knows the controversy is about embryonic stem cells, which are the important ones.

Dear Meg,
I really liked your following answer. You do not allow E-mail so I used this system to reach you.( Sorry about that)
Excellent question. Jesus said, “Not every one who says to me, `Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21), and “If you would enter life, keep the commandments” (Matthew 19:17).
