1. The University of Newcastle upon Tyne’s Institute of Human Genetics is one of the largest in Europe and concentrates its research activity on both Human Embryonic Stem Cells (HESC) and adult stem cells. All departments in the Faculty of Medical Science at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne were awarded either a 5 or 5* assessment as part of the UK Governments Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2001, ranking Newcastle third overall in the UK.

President Bush issued a veto of the stem cell research bill last week and Theravitae founder, Don Margolis couldn’t be happier. “I disagree with him on many things, but I have to say he made the right decision this time.” Don stated.

The House and Congress both passed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007, a bill that would have appropriated millions of dollars of taxpayer money to embryonic stem cell research. However, President Bush vetoed it thus continuing his policy of not budging when it comes to embryonic stem cells. Bush vetoed a similar bill supporting embryonic stem cell research last July.

“Why don’t they come up with a bill supporting adult stem cell research?” Margolis asks. Margolis is an expert on this subject. In 2003, Margolis started an adult stem cell company in Thailand with his own money. To date, his company, Theravitae has treated over 200 patients suffering from heart disease with their own adult stem cells.

Margolis keeps repeating his mantra “I just want to be shown one example where embryonic stem cells have helped somebody, just one. And if you can’t show me a human, at least show me one positive result.” Margolis states nobody has been able to present any affirmative results yet. “I spend an hour a day reading the latest stem cell research….Nada.” he says.

Margolis goes on to say there is no state or federal ban on embryonic stem cell research. “If Bill Gates wants to throw away 5 billion on embryonic stem cell research in his home state of Washington, he can.” Don exclaims. Margolis thinks the reason embryonic stem cell researchers need money from the U.S. taxpayer is they aren’t getting it from private investors. Margolis invested $3 million of his own money into Theravitae. “I saw that adult stem cells do work and I staked my life’s savings on it. Don’t you think if embryonic stem cells showed any promise, an entrepreneur would take the risk?”

Margolis thinks that the embryonic stem cell lobby is so powerful that many people don’t know the difference between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. He says “My patients know the difference and that is what upsets me, more money should be spent on what is helping people now (adult stem cells), not something that may or may not work in 50 years like the embryonic stem cells.”

While President Obama recently lifted the ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research imposed by President Bush eight years ago, some people continue to oppose this move and call it unethical. So, while the scientific community is thrilled by the news and says the research will lead to medical breakthroughs, some communities consider the research as a “slippery slope”. But, what exactly are stem cells and why are they so important as to generate hot debates among all sorts of circles – political, social, religious, and what not? Here’s a look at some of those details.

The science behind stem cells

What sets stem cells (SCs) apart from other cells is their ability to turn into any other type of tissue in the body. A stem cell from the bone marrow, for example, can be transformed into a neuron or nerve cell in the brain.

Types of stem cells: Embryonic stem cells versus Adult stem cells

Broadly, there are two types of stem cells in humans – embryonic and non-embryonic. Embryonic stem cells (ESC), as the name suggests, are isolated from the inner cell mass of an early stage embryo (4-5 days post fertilization, and consisting of 50-150 cells). On the other hand, non-embryonic stem cells which are also known as adult stem cells (ASCs) are found in adult tissues.

ESCs are pluripotent as opposed to ASCs that are multipotent. What this means is that ESCs can differentiate into any of the more than 220 cell types in the adult body (to be able to give rise to any mature cell type) while ASCs can only form a limited number of cell types (closely related family of cells).

Utility of stem cells

The importance of stem cell lies in the fact that they can be converted into any type of other cells or tissues in the body – neurons, pancreatic tissue, heart muscle cells, etc.

So, for example, stem cells harvested from your bone marrow can possibly be used to repair the damage in your heart muscle caused during a heart attack, or to correct blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia (anaemia) through transfusions of stem cells.

SC therapy is believed to have the potential to dramatically change the treatment of human disease. Embryonic stem (ES) cell therapies have been proposed for regenerative medicine and tissue replacement after injury or disease.

But, it should be noted at this point that ESC therapies are not in use yet. They are still only in the stage where medical researchers are testing them on animals.

On the other hand, ASCs have been successfully used to treat leukemia (leukaemia) and related bone/blood cancers utilizing bone marrow transplants.

The controversy

The controversy behind SC research pertains only to human ESC research and not all stem cell research. What is controversial is the fact that the source of the research material, human embryos, is destroyed in the process of harvesting the SCs. Pro-life activists oppose the research arguing that a human embryo is a human life that is entitled to protection.

Another area of controversy is that ESC technologies are a slippery slope that may lead to reproductive cloning which may devalue human life.

The production of ASCs, on the other hand, does not require the destruction of an embryo and therefore, ASC research and therapy are not as controversial. Though, ASC treatment does carry a risk of rejection by the body’s immune system.

The present state of stem cell research

There are some countries that offer treatments using SCs (read about medical tourism) but in such therapies only ASCs derived from the patient’s body are used (autograft). When possible, autografts are preferred as they remove the risk of rejection by the recipient’s body.

There is promising research ongoing in the field of SCs to derive treatments for a wider variety of diseases including cancer, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), multiple sclerosis, lung disease, arthritis, organ failure, and muscle damage, amongst a number of other impairments and conditions.

The future

The ultimate question on the minds of many is – “Why can’t we simply use adult stem cells instead of harvesting embryonic stem cells?”

Theoretically, ESCs are considered better because they work as a biological blank slate and are the most versatile of all SCs whereas ASCs are sort of semi-specialized cells and are not as versatile as ESCs.

Though the field of ASCs is not marred by controversies, the problem with them is also that they are often present only in minute quantities, are difficult to isolate and purify, and their numbers may decrease with age, according to a primer by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

At this juncture, much remains unknown about the potential of ESCs. But, going by the success in the field of animal testing it may very well turn out that ESCs could provide solutions to many diseases in humans.

The answer to the potential benefits of ESC lies in research. To understand the benefits of embryonic stem cells or any type of stem cells for that matter, and to discover possible treatments in humans, various lines of research need to be pursued simultaneously.

Only research can prove if ASCs are better over ESCs for curing human diseases or vice versa. It may also emerge that ASCs offer good treatments for certain ailments, while ESCs are better for curing others.

Stem cells hit the limelight in November 1998, when researchers first reported that they had isolated human embryonic stem cells. These cells, isolated from embryos that were several days old, can theoretically be differentiated into any kind of cell in the human body, from blood cells to brain cells to muscle cells. This was big news on the scientific front since scientists hoped to use these cells to repair damaged cells and tissue in adult humans. Unfortunately this research breakthrough also created a host of stem cell research issues that are still being debated today.

So what’s the big fuss about these research issues? Most of the controversy centers on the fact that the embryonic stem cells come from embryos and scientists must destroy the embryos to harvest the stem cells. Many pro-life and religious groups argue that an embryo represents a human life and that embryonic stem cell work is equivalent to murdering human lives. There are currently several sources of embryos, including aborted fetuses and fertility clinics (which have thousands of unwanted frozen embryos). All of these sources are currently undergoing serious scrutiny from the government and various lobbying groups.

Other stem cell research issues include the following questions:

- Should we pursue stem cell research just because we can?
- How far should we take stem cell research?
- Who should regulate this kind of research and how?
- Who should pay for this kind of research (which is very expensive)?
- What role should the government play in stem cell research?

It will likely take the government and the various scientific researchers involved in this controversy quite a while to resolve these research issues. Luckily for you, the consumer, there are alternative ways you can benefit from stem cells without getting involved in all the fuss. Along with embryonic stem cell research, scientists have also been studying ways to boost stem cell production in adults. Each of our bodies makes its own stem cells to repair and rejuvenate damaged areas, so while we may not be able to use embryonic stem cells to improve our health we can use our own to become healthier.

The stem cells in our bodies produce over 30 types of growth factors and tissue chemicals. They also help recruit other local and systemic stem cells to focus on repairing damaged tissue. Republican Mitt Romney’s has repeatedly flip flopped on some key issues. In doing so, he has only proved how easily he can let go of his principles in his bid for power. Or does it indicate that he simply does not have any principles to speak of?

For instance, in 1994, during his earlier, unsuccessful run for Massachusetts governor against Democrat Ted Kennedy, Romney projected himself as being committed to a pro-choice policy. Subsequently, in 2002, while running again for Massachusetts governor, Romney remained an ardent supporter of women’s right to choose. But later Romney changed his position. He now calls for doing away with the Roe v. Wade ruling that would allow individual states to define their own abortion policies.

Romney similarly reversed his reformist views with regard to gay rights. After declaring himself staunchly in support of equal rights for gays in 1994-a position he retained even in 2002-he suddenly changed his stance and declared marriage out of bounds for gay couples.

Another issue is federal funding for stem cell research. In 2005, Romney held a position that favored state sponsored embryonic stem cell research, saying, “I believe stem cell research is important for our state and for our nation.” However, he subsequently shifted to a more conservative stance, and opposed funding for research involving embryonic stem cells.

The ideal candidate for the post of president will be a leader who can take tough decisions. For this, he would need to have a strong internal value system. More importantly, he would need to have the mettle required to stand his ground. Such strong leadership is even more important today, when one considers the threats facing America. Romney may be a capable executive with the ability to get work done quickly. However, his compulsive flip flopping has proven that he lacks the moral fiber required to steer the nation during these difficult times.

Today many parents are choosing to have their newborn baby’s cord blood stored privately in a cord blood bank as a future source of stem cells for medical treatments. There is, however, an alternative to private storage. This is to donate the blood to public storage so that it is available to help others.

The banking of blood collected from the umbilical cord following the birth of a baby plays a very important part in saving lives. The blood has a particularly high number of stem cells which are useful in treating many life-threatening diseases.

Two types of cord blood banks are available for storage. At a public bank you can donate the blood so that it is available for use by anyone to help someone with a life-threatening disease. Unlike a private bank, where your baby’s stem cells are stored for the exclusive use of your child and your family, when you donate to a public bank there is no guarantee that they will be available to you if you should need them.

Some public banks may use the donated blood for research purposes instead of treatments that directly help sick patients. Once you have decided to go ahead and donate your child’s cord blood, you will need to find a participating hospital or public bank in your community. It can be difficult to find a bank to give your donation to since there is a limited number of public banks in existence. You will then need to tell the bank that you want to donate to it so that they can begin the paperwork and all of the other formalities. This needs to be done well in advance so that it can be completed by the date of your delivery. Arrangements between the hospital and the bank should usually be in place by the 34th week of your pregnancy. The donor usually needs to be at least 18 years old, however some banks are able to take donations from mothers who are 16 years old. The donor must also be in good general health. The cord blood bank will inform you if you are eligible to donate. After the blood is collected, it is sent to the public cord blood bank where it is tested and is then stored for future use. The identity of the donor will never be disclosed by the bank, so their anonymity is guaranteed.

As more and more people donate to a public bank, more research can be done and a greater number of people may have their lives saved thanks to these donations.

Wholegrain food products are thought to be good for reducing the amount of low density lipoproteins (LDL) in the body. LDL are responsible for transporting cholesterol round the body causing things like thickening arteries and other cardiovascular problems over time. Try to use whole grain bread when making sandwiches or as an accompaniment with a meal. If you put butter on the bread then swap to spreads that contain plant sterols.

It is thought that coffee can contribute to increasing cholesterol levels. A tip, if you can’t give up your favorite blend of coffee, is to use paper filters. These filters will remove the substances the make cholesterol high. If you want an alternative to coffee then consider black tea. Studies have shown that a few glasses of black tea a day can lower cholesterol in people.

Use olive oil as much as possible. This could be in cooking or on salads. You could even use it in place of butter or margarine on toast, scones and muffins. This is a common way to eat bread in southern European countries like Spain, Italy and parts of France where heart disease is one of the lowest in Europe.

Incorporate oatmeal into your diet. Porridge for breakfast springs to mind if you want to eat oatmeal. It is a soluble fiber that reduces the amount of LDL in the body much like wholegrain foodstuffs. Add a bit of cinnamon to your porridge. Cinnamon is thought to be good for reducing blood sugar levels and also to lower cholesterol.

These are simple changes that you can make in your daily life that are fairly easy to implement. You may not see a reduction your cholesterol levels overnight but in time it will lower. Try to implement an exercise program into your lifestyle too.

We have searched for the “Fountain of Youth” for lifetimes. We’ve heard stories that tell of a mystical spring that grants eternal youth and vitality to all who drink from it. It’s the stuff of fairytales. Or is it?

Physical longevity is a hot topic these days. You read about various technologies which offer new and plausible methods such as regenerative medicine, bio-technological advances, and stem cell research, that hold the promise of increased life spans as we search for ways to become immortal.

Dr. Patrick Dixon explains in his presentation titled Biotech/Genetic Revolution: Impact on Education and Ageing, that in America alone there are 75,000 people over the age of 100 and there are technologies capable of increasing that number to over 140,000 within the next 5 or 6 years. These medical advances have already been used to repair a person’s brain after a stroke and to repair one’s spinal cord using one’s own tissue.

Our idea of adolescence used to be “till 18,” but now it can be upwards to 30 years old or more. Many of us who have children know this to be true. Our kids come home at 33 with the laundry in tow when things don’t work out. People are waiting longer to have children, sometimes even into their 40′s. In fact, biologically, we are 10 years younger than our parents were at the same age, and the idea of “staying young forever” is becoming more and more real.

But why is the concept of physical immortality so seductive? Why do people want to live forever? Probably, so they can continue to experience the world and all the pleasures it has to offer. The Path to Eternity

Kabbalah is referred to as the “wisdom of the hidden” because it discloses the part of reality that is hidden from our five senses. Throughout history, scientific research and advancements have always come from our desire to know what is hidden from our five senses. But the scientific research has only expanded the range of our senses via instruments like x-ray machines and telescopes, yet none of these technologies have actually researched something beyond the perception of the five senses.

Allegorically speaking, man is like a “black box,” which feels, understands and perceives only what enters it through its five “openings.” Hence, in all our investigations, we are limited by our five senses. And all of the external instruments which we build, or which we are to build in the future, cannot escape the limitations of the five senses. Thus, in order to perceive beyond our five senses, we have to learn how to create a new “opening” within the box, or in simpler words, how to develop a new sense.

Kabbalists explain that every person has the ability to develop a sense that is able to perceive a broader, comprehensive realm of reality, beyond time and space. We may refer to it as “the soul,” but in fact, it works just like any other sense, only on a higher level of consciousness, beyond that which relates to our physical body.

When we begin to feel ourselves through the soul, we will realize that we really don’t need to search for ways to make our bodies live forever. Through the soul, we connect to the eternal flow of life, and experience pleasures and sensations that are infinitely greater than the world of our five senses.

You would think that having artificial hearts available in the USA would cause other nations to look at us as the greatest lifesavers in the world when it comes to heart patients who would have no chance for survival without one. Well, as it turns out, Thailand is actually engaged in therapy that is saving the lives of heart disease patients by using something you may not know exists…I know I hadn’t heard about it. This therapy, although experimental is proving to be an incredible tool and one that will be getting alot more press in the months ahead. What is this “hush-hush” procedure? Stem Cell therapy! No – not using someone else’s stem cells, YOUR OWN! That’s right – and it sounds fascinating. Here’s the story:

I met a courteous man by the name of Al recently who picked me up in a limousine to take me to the airport. Nice guy and in his late sixties. He looked very healthy and we began talking about wellness and natural healh. We talked about how he eats healthfully and why he is so intent upon doing everything possible to stay well. Apparently, Al wasn’t always so healthy because he had severe heart and valve damage. He explained that he would have died if he hadn’t discovered the new procedure being offered in Thailand.

He and others have opted to leave the American medical care scene to seek treatments only available in that country where there are no regulations governing experimental treatments that offer promise. Risky? Maybe…but he feels the risk was worth it. Is it right for you? You need to do some research and ask alot of questions.

Thailand’s stem cell treatment avoids the controversy surrounding ethics involving the use of stems cells from outside donors where human embryos are destroyed to collect the cells. Instead Thailand seems to have developed a method of extracting and harvesting stem cells from the patients own blood. Amazing? It sure is.

Al continued his story, telling me that he flew to Thailand at a total cost of approximately $30,000 to have the procedure. Somehow the patient’s own stem cells are harvested by chemically “shaking them” loose from the bone marrow of the patients and then extracting them from their blood by a special process.

The stem cells, after processing are reintroduced into the patient’s body. After reintroduction, they begin the process of rebuilding the heart tissue and/or valves. Like many of the others having this procedure, Al had a difficult time walking from his driveway into his home. He is now riding his bike daily, lifts suitcases (he easily put my 40lb bag in the trunk) and lives quite an normal life. His family is happy he made the choice.In these procedures, stem cells are extracted from a patient’s own blood, cultured in a lab and implanted directly into the blocked coronary artery or, when no artery is available, into the scarred area in the heart. The goal is to rebuild heart muscle and/or improve blood flow. About 350 patients have been treated so far.

More than 400 cardiologists and other healthcare workers are attending a conference to be held in South Wales. The medical conference will highlight the latest advances in stem cell research and how it can repair heart tissue. There is also a possibility that this procedure may be available in the coming months in Canada and other countries.

Apparently, this personal stem cell treatment may be the solution to help reverse certain auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and others. Some doctors in Thailand are using stem cell enriched fat for breast reconstruction procedures. Stem cells seem to help grow new blood vessels in the fat creating new living cells inside the breast. Researchers are saying that this breast tissue is more normal to the touch and can help to repair the breast dents found after lumpectomies and other procedures. It does take longer than implants to get good results but they are hopeful that eventually, using the person’s own stem cells may be the best solution. octors in Brazil are using similar techniques successfully to treat Type I Diabetic Patents. It seems that in a small group of diabetics 14 out of 15 patients have been able to stop daily insulin injections. More is on the horizon.

If you or someone you know is suffering with heart disease do whatever you can to help yourself stay well. Follow your doctor’s recommendations, eat healthfully, exercise as you are allowed or instructed to, and continue to do your own research. I find that most often doctors have very little time to investigate what is happening in other countries. Wisely, they also will try to prevent their patients from rushing off to other countries where there is no scientific basis for the procedure or therapies offered. In this case, I think your doctor might want to learn more about this new stem cell research. Perhaps your physician can speak with doctors at the Thailand clinic on your behalf to get important details. Do alot of research before you make a decision to participate in this or any other therapy outside of the USA. Talk with patients who have undergone treatment as well as the doctors who provide it.

I think we owe the medical scientists a great deal of thanks all around the world. Perhaps eventually all nations will work together to bring the most efficient and effective discoveries to those who need them. Hadn’t I learned about this technique from my limo driver, I would not have known about it…it didn’t make the front page news. Valuable discoveries like this should be highlighted immediately and taught to medical teams all around the world. But, before you make your decision please do as much research as possible, look at every other reasonable option you have here in the USA, talk with your doctors, your family, and other health care authorities. No doubt you can probably find patients who have undergone the treatment by searching on line or by asking the clinic in Thailand for patient referrals.

Abortion is a local hot button issue here in Missouri, so as a Missouri voter, I decided to do some research to understand where each 2008 presidential candidate stands on the issue. Personally, while I could never have an abortion myself (unless it meant saving my life-I do have three living children), I would not take that choice away from others, for two reasons.

First, I believe that if one is the victim of incest, rape, or molestation in any form that results in a pregnancy, the woman should have the right to decide not to carry that child. Second, I believe that abortions will continue to happen even if it becomes illegal, so I would prefer that a safe and legal procedure is available. You never know, one of your own loved ones may resort to an illegal abortion if the legal procedures aren’t available-and wouldn’t you rather “not know” about a safe legal abortion than find out your loved one had an illegal abortion and was seriously injured or even killed?

Now, let’s discuss the candidate’s views on abortion.

Barack Obama on Abortion

First, let’s start with Obama’s voting record on this issue. In 1998, Obama supported Roe v Wade. He later also voted against prohibiting minors from crossing state lines in order to obtain an abortion. He also voted no on requiring abortion centers to notifying parents when minors receive out of state abortions. He supported a bill to increase funding for embryonic stem cell research, which some say is a vote to support abortion.

In 2005, Obama voted yes to a one hundred million dollar plan to reduce teen pregnancy through education and providing contraceptives. In 2006, he supported a bill to provide contraceptives to low-income women for free to help them take control of their bodies and avoid unwanted pregnancy. He also voted in 2007 to ensure access for low income families to free contraception.

Now, let’s discuss Obama’s personal views on the subject. First, Obama feels that there is a middle ground between the pro-life and the pro-choice camps. He also feels that it’s important to continue to educate our children on abstinence as well as contraception. He has said that he has no problem with law-makers restricting partial birth abortions at the state level, but that he thinks the mother should have the ability to make that decision ultimately. I disagree with this last statement-I think that a partial birth abortion should never occur unless the mother’s life is at risk.

Obama points out that stem cell research promises to cure more than 70 currently incurable diseases, and this point is one with which I cannot legitimately argue. And most recently, Obama stated that he personally could not determine the point at which a fetus becomes a baby, alluding to the fact that he believes that’s a choice only God could make.

Bottom line on Obama, he is officially “Pro-Choice”, according to the NRLC votes.

John McCain on Abortion

Again, we’ll start with McCain’s voting record on abortion.

McCain voted to repeal Roe v Wade in May of 2007. He voted yes to denying grant money to facilities which perform abortions, and yes to requiring parental notification for minors receiving out of state abortions, as well as yes to making it illegal to transport a minor across state lines for an abortion. He also voted no to the one hundred million dollar plan to reduce teen pregnancy by education and providing contraceptives. He would ban all partial birth abortions, except those which would save the mother’s life. Here is an area in which McCain and I agree.

He voted yes to banning military base abortions. He also supported banning human cloning, but he voted yes on expanding embryonic stem cell research.

As far as his personal views go, he does worry that if abortion is made illegal, women would continue to get illegal abortions, and he agrees that victims of rape and incest should have the right to choose an abortion. These are points on which I agree with McCain.

He feels that if abortions become illegal, we should prosecute the abortion doctors, not the women getting the abortions. He says that if his own daughter wanted an abortion, he would have a “family conference” to discuss her options.

Bottom line: While he is voted “Pro-Life” by NARAL, he is voted “mixed record on abortion” by the NRLC.
