Question by shell answer man: What line would America have crossed?
George Bush, in vetoing a bill that would have approved the harvesting of stem cells from IVF embryos said “it would have been crossing a line” to have passed the bill. First, it seems to me that America has crossed whatever line it is that he (the conscience in chief?) thinks we shouldn’t cross. Second, and this is the question part, what IS the line? Is it the supposition that that blastocyst has a soul and that to disassemble it and extract the stem cells is to scramble the soul? Because it seems like if we use stem cells from anywhere we have to use soul-endowed cells regardless – we have to use cells that originate in living humans. Sure, maybe if you do a biopsy on a living adult to extract adult stem cell tissue you can claim that the entire life isn’t lost but in the case of discarded IVF embryos the life was lost when the woman got pregnant. Also, unless I’m mistaken the biopsied cells have as much soul as any other cell in a human body.
And please, spare me the “abortion is murder” speech. Actually, that IS the speech. That’s really the problem is that we’re letting people who think in bumper stickers drive policy and it’s just time to grow up and address the real ethical issues rather than to pretend it’s all black and white.
